By Staff Reporter

With the advancements in technology there is need to make sure all important information is saved and stored safely for reference purposes and safekeeping data, people lose important information on a daily basis so it is a prerequisite to have all information and data kept secure hence 31 March is recognised as World Backup day.

The observation originally started as World Backup Month, and later changed to World Backup Day. Maxtor, a company specializing in hard drives, initiated this annual celebration. Now taking place every year on March 31, World Backup Day reminds us to make multiple copies of our digital treasures, or risk losing them all forever.

The day also serves to instill better online and technological practices. Considering how dependent humans are on technology now, we still haven’t cultivated habits that will ensure that our information and personal data are secure and safe.

It happens to all of us — that one precious photo or video that was captured to immortalize a moment, but it doesn’t exist anymore. Broken hard drives, hacked computers, erratic phones, or any other glitch that erased irretrievable items, we’ve all experienced it.

A backup is a copy of all your important files — for example, your family photos, home videos, documents and emails. Instead of storing it all in one place (like your computer or smartphone), you keep a copy of everything somewhere safe.

Losing your files is way more common than you’d think.

One small accident or failure could destroy all the important stuff you care about.

  • 21 % of people have never made a backup
  • 113 phones lost or stolen every minute
  • 29% of data loss cases are caused by accident
  • 30% of all computers are already infected with malware

It is of significance to make sure your data is safe and secure to avoid unprecedented losses of precious memories and important information you might to utilise in the future, the 31st of March marks World Backup Day, a reminder to always have your information safe and secure at all cost!
